The Basics

What Is a Fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is a senior financial executive who leads a company's finance function on a part-time, ongoing basis. They provide the leadership a full-time chief financial officer would, including financial strategy, forecasting, cash flow management, and lender relationships, for businesses that need that level of judgment but aren't ready for a full-time hire.

Most fractional CFO arrangements are one person, which means the same senior executive who advises on strategy is also building the model, updating the forecast, and formatting the board deck. VantagePoint works differently, and we call it Fractional Finance. A Fractional CFO at VantagePoint leads every engagement and owns the strategy, the relationship, and the sign-off. Behind them, Associates and Analysts do the forecasting, modeling, and reporting that the strategy depends on. That gives you both the leadership and the capacity to act on it, which is a lot to ask of any one part-time person.

The Team Behind Every Engagement

Fractional CFO

The embedded financial leader and the lead on your engagement. A Fractional CFO owns the finance function and the relationship with you, sets the strategy, manages banking and lender relationships, and signs off on everything the team produces. One leads every engagement, and our most senior CFOs step in for the highest-stakes matters, such as a capital raise, an acquisition, or a lender negotiation.

Associates

The execution leads. Associates own finance workstreams from start to finish, including forecasting, budgeting, cash flow, and pricing and revenue analysis, and they turn that analysis into recommendations you can act on. They coordinate the day-to-day work, build the reporting and systems it runs on, and connect it to CFO-level strategy.

Analysts

The analytical and data layer of the engagement. Analysts build and maintain the financial models, structure the data behind your reporting, and prepare the variance and trend analysis that feeds every forecast and budget. Their work is reviewed by the levels above before any of it reaches you.

Who Needs It?

Signs Your Business Is Ready For Fractional Finance.

If two or more of these describe your business, it's worth a conversation.

  • You've outgrown what your bookkeeper or controller can tell you

  • Big decisions are being made without a forecast you trust

  • Cash flow surprises are becoming too common

  • A lender, investor, or board wants reporting you can't produce today

  • You need CFO-level judgment but not a full-time CFO yet

  • You run more than one entity and can't see the whole picture

What's Included

What A Fractional Finance Engagement Covers

These six areas are the recurring work of an engagement. The mix is scoped to your business and shifts as the business does.

Reporting & Analysis

Monthly management reporting with budget-to-actual and variance analysis, KPI dashboards built around how your business runs, and margin and unit-economics analysis that shows what's actually driving performance.

Forecasting, Budgeting & Planning

Annual budgets built from the ground up rather than last year plus a percentage, rolling forecasts, and where it's useful, all three financial statements. Scenario analysis shows what a decision does before you commit to it.

Cash Flow & Working Capital

Cash flow forecasting, liquidity monitoring, and working capital management, so you know how much room the business has, what's tying up cash, and what the next few months are likely to need.

Financial Infrastructure & Systems

The models, reporting structure, and tooling the finance function runs on, designed once and improved over time instead of being rebuilt every time a new question comes up.

Strategic Finance & Leadership

Financial strategy and capital allocation, pricing and revenue management, and support in vendor, customer, and financing negotiations. The Fractional CFO leading the engagement is your primary financial point of contact.

Banking & Lender Support

Ongoing management of banking and lender relationships, including covenant tracking and lender reporting, and getting the business ready for financing well before you need it.

Finance Works Best When It Works With Everyone.

Forecasting and interpreting results is only part of the job. The numbers are produced by sales, marketing, operations, and supply chain, so that's where we spend our time. We sit down with the people running each part of the business to understand how it actually works, and that's what lets us recommend changes that hold up in practice and, where an outside team can, help carry them out. It's also why the forecast gets better, because it's built with the people who have to deliver it.

How It Works

How a Fractional Finance Engagement Works

We start by understanding where the business stands, build a plan toward where you want it to go, and then work alongside you to get there.

1

Free Consultation

We talk through where the business is and where you want to take it. If what you need is accounting, a one-time project, or something we don't do, we'll tell you in that first conversation.

No cost
2

Assessment

During onboarding we review your financials, reporting, and systems, look at how decisions currently get made, and meet the people behind the numbers. The aim is an honest picture of where the company stands before anyone recommends anything.

Where the business stands
3

The Plan

We lay out what the finance function needs to do over the coming year to get you where you're going, which work comes first, and the team to deliver it. That becomes the scope and the monthly fee, agreed before the work begins.

Built around your goals
4

Day To Day

The team runs the work: reporting, forecasting, cash flow, and the questions that come up between meetings. Most engagements meet every two weeks with a deeper monthly review, and priorities shift as the business does.

What This Looks Like in Practice

The Challenge

A transportation and logistics company had strong accounting — accurate, reliable reporting, well run by its internal team. What it didn't have was finance. There was no three-statement modeling, no forward-looking cash flow or balance sheet projection, and no way to see twelve months ahead with any confidence. The annual budget was set as a flat percentage increase rather than built from the ground up. Planning happened reactively, and strategic decisions were made without the financial infrastructure to model their consequences before committing to them.

The Solution

VantagePoint built a full three-statement financial model from the ground up — replacing the flat-percentage budget with a true annual operating plan built at the general ledger level, accounting for timing, vendors, personnel, and taxes. A gross profit forecast was developed using AI-driven regression analysis that accounts for seasonal patterns, service-line mix, and volume trends. A multi-input compensation forecasting tool was built to project the company's largest expense by employee and by month — with enough granularity to support real workforce planning decisions. Balance sheet and cash flow models were built alongside the P&L, giving the ownership group a complete forward view across all three statements for the first time.

The Challenge

A super-premium spirits brand operating across multiple markets had a pricing structure that had no longer worked, an OpEx profile that needed optimization, and no clear financial picture of where to grow next.

The Solution

VantagePoint rebuilt pricing across existing markets, established pricing frameworks for six additional markets, identified and eliminated over $200,000 in low ROI operating expenses, and supported an assessment of international expansion opportunities including export markets in Asia and the Caribbean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fractional CFO FAQ

A fractional CFO is usually one senior person working part-time across strategy and execution. Fractional Finance is how VantagePoint delivers that role: a Fractional CFO leads every engagement and owns the strategy, the relationship, and the sign-off, while Associates and Analysts handle the forecasting, modeling, and reporting behind it. The work gets done at the level that suits it, and everything is reviewed before it reaches you.

The recurring work is reporting, forecasting, and cash flow. The team produces the monthly management reporting, keeps the budget and rolling forecast current, monitors liquidity and working capital, and analyzes pricing and margins. The Fractional CFO leading the engagement reviews that work, manages banking and lender relationships, and works with you on the decisions it informs. Between meetings, the team handles the questions that come up as the business runs.

No. Fractional Finance covers financial leadership, planning, and analysis, and it relies on books that are already being kept. Bookkeeping, reconciliations, and month-end close are a separate Accounting & Controllership engagement, which many clients run alongside it. Fractional Finance also doesn't include tax return preparation or audit work, though we regularly coordinate with the CPA firms that handle both.

Most engagements run on a touchpoint every two weeks and a deeper review once a month, where we go through performance, assumptions, and priorities. The Fractional CFO leading your engagement is also available between meetings for time-sensitive questions. The cadence is set around your calendar and adjusted as the business needs.

Engagements start at $3,000 a month. The monthly fee is based on the scope of work and the mix of team members needed to deliver it, and it's agreed in writing before the engagement begins. If the scope changes as the business does, we talk about it before it affects the fee.

No, you're not locked in. Our accounting and fractional CFO engagements run on a standard one-year agreement, but you can cancel at any time, so the commitment never outlasts the value you're getting. Consulting engagements are different: their timelines are scoped to the specific project. In every case, the structure is built to fit your business rather than bind it.

Yes, as additional work on request. That includes financial modeling and materials for an equity or debt raise, board and investor presentations, lender negotiations and new credit facilities, and buy-side or sell-side transaction support. Our role in all of it is advisory. We prepare you and the numbers, and we don't solicit investors or act as a broker.

We're grateful for the fresh eyes and new insights the team at VantagePoint has brought to the table when meeting with everyone in my company.

Entering a new industry without prior experience, I needed more than just financial oversight - I needed strategic clarity. Thomas and his team have brought exactly that.

This industry is uniquely complex - between cash flow timing, inventory financing, distributor terms, and margin management - and having the right financial partner early on can make a meaningful difference in both speed and sustainability.
